Procreate

Procreate is a brilliant drawing tool for the iPad.

While I found the initial learning curve a little steep, because the commands are mostly hidden, it is extremely easy to use. It reminds me of using oil paint in that it does exactly what I think it will do. Other art tools I’ve tried often remind me more of working with watercolours, where the tool seems to have more of a mind of its own and to require more planning around how to get what I want.

Because of the hidden-menu issue though, I often miss what the tool is capable of. And last night I made the very happy discovery that it actually saves every single step in each drawing. It can output little videos showing my drawing process. Delightful!

I train people in using Microsoft Word for formatting documents every so often. Honestly, the main component of the training is just giving them some time to work through the menus and learn what it’s capable of. I really need to take some time myself with Procreate, to look through every item in the menu and see what it’s capable of.

In the meantime, I am just delighted by the ability to look back at some of my pictures and see what I was doing.
